The Cult Of Virginity And Virginity - 969 Words
For centuries people have made decisions or assumptions of others based solely upon what they choose to do in their respective privacies. Societal institutions ranging from schools to religious affiliations have created guidelines surrounding sexual activity that determine when and if it should be done. While the topic of virginity may be taboo for some, people fail to realize the social stigmas associated with the term in itself. In ââ¬Å"The Cult of Virginityâ⬠, the author succeeds at illuminating the notion that virginity is a socially constructed term that invokes or revokes the morality of women. Valenti does an excellent job of challenging the societal standards regarding virginity by comparing them to her personal experiences as well as referencing the observations of other authors. Personally, I first encountered the term around the sixth grade. One of my more developed peers came to school raving about how she ââ¬Å"lost itâ⬠and how she was now ââ¬Å"a womanâ⠬ . At that naà ¯ve age I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about and immediately went home to discuss the topic with my mother. With widened eyes and a dropped jaw, my mother went into a full lecture about how that activity was reserved for only married, adult persons and should be kept ââ¬Å"sacredâ⬠until then. Furthermore, I had to disassociate myself with that particular individual from that point onward. Should Marriages Aren t Be Successful - 984 Words
Marriages arenââ¬â¢t made to be successful. To the contrary, the imperfection is what makes couples perfect. There is no such thing as success in marriage, that would only mean that tolerance is at a high and couples are cooping with each otherââ¬â¢s flaws in order to remain together, or successful in the eyes of a judgmental society. The aggressive assertion of how marriages arenââ¬â¢t meant go be successful comes from the stance that the way you deal with each otherââ¬â¢s failures which is exactly the opposite of ââ¬Å"successâ⬠, transforms it in a great relationship. The phrase you listen to right before you get married ââ¬Å"for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death us do partâ⬠is a clear demonstration of how marriages arenââ¬â¢t meant to be ââ¬Å"successfulâ⬠. 1984 By Orwell And Totalitarian Society Essay Example For Students
1984 By Orwell And Totalitarian Society Essay Living in a society with limited freedom of expression is not, in any case, enjoyable. A Totalitarian society is a good example of such a society, because although it provides control for the people, it can deny them a great deal of freedom to express themselves. The fictional society in George Orwells 1984 stands as a metaphor for a Totalitarian society. Communication, personal beliefs, and individual loyalty to the government are all controlled by the inner party, which governs the people of Oceania in order to keep them from rebelling. Current society in America is much more democratic. It contrasts with Orwells society of 1984 because communication, personal beliefs and the peoples loyalty to the government are all determined by the individual. In order to keep the people of Oceania in conformity with the desires of the governing Inner Party; the Inner Party controls several aspects of the peoples lives. Communication, for one, is controlled for the benefit of the nation. We will write a custom essay on 1984 By Orwell And Totalitarian Society specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Newspeak is a modified version of language that is enforced upon the people in order to limit their expression. Syme and Winston, two middle-class workers in Oceania, discuss the concept of Newspeak. Syme reveals that he supports the system, demonstrating how he has been brainwashed by the Inner Party who enforces the system. Its a beautiful thing, the destruction of words You havent a real appreciation for Newspeak, Winston Dont you see that the whole aim of Newspeak is to narrow the range of thought? In the end we shall make thougtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words in which to express it. p. 46 One can detect from this quotation that the people of Oceania, as a group, have been brainwashed by the Inner Party to use only Newspeak. Syme, for one, understands the purpose of it, and he still complies with the system because he has been trained to do so. The concept of Newspeak is designed to control personal beliefs of the citizens by limiting their form of expression as Syme explains. But when the governing system is not followed, Thought Police are used to prevent thoughts that oppose the nation. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. p. 6 There is no doubt that through both Newspeak and Thought Police the system of government in 1984 has adequately prevented the people from thinking against it. When all this surveillance is placed on the people, they learn to comply with their country and eventually begin to value it automatically. At the end of the story, after Winston is accused by the Thought Police of thoughtcrime and is tortured, he finally conforms to the general thoughts of Oceania. He had finally won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother. p. 245 This quote indicates that the inner party has done everything that was necessary to preserve Winstons loyalty to theà nation. Even Winston, who at one time was against his government, has now been fixed to support it and love his leader. The government of Oceania has gone to great lengths to change Winstons mind, and as always, they have gotten what they desire. America in 1999 is much different from Orwells 1984 because, for one, freedom of expression is a dominating factor in American communication. In conversation as well as newspapers and magazines, a variety of views and opinions are openly expressed. Censorship is not enforced to a high degree. As an example, demonstrations and protests are often held which counter certain governmental policies; laws or propositions are often spoken out against in public. The fact that these rebellious actions are not punished by the government proves that the government of America is much more lenient than that of 1984. The expression of such a variety of beliefs comes from the freedom of individual beliefs. .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d , .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .postImageUrl , .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d , .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d:hover , .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d:visited , .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d:active { border:0!important; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d:active , .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u33a1087b936fdfebda16c3db603b312d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Attention Deficit Disorder in Todays Society EssayThe government does not maintain the thoughts and opinions of the individual; the government does not have a system to control the thoughts of the individual. This is why one commonly sees such a variety of beliefs and ideas spread in advertisements and media. For instance, while there are often advertisement for meat, leather or fur products in magazines and such, other advertisements often try to suggest a more humane treatment of animals, therefore contradicting the idea that animals should be killed for human consumption. The modern American government fully allows any given belief of the individual people. And because our beliefs vary, our opinion of the government can vary. While some people support their nation, others defy it because they have the independence to do so. Neo-Nazi skinheads traditionally wear an American flag upside down on their clothing or burn the flag. There is no policing that prevents people from doing this because the government gives them the freedom. All in all, modern Americans have an extremely high level of freedom regarding all forms of expression. The story of 1984 reflects a society that totally contrasts with America today. While Orwells objective was primarily written to exaggerate the Totalitarian/Communist and other conditions of society surrounding him, 1984 presents an important guide to life for modern Americans. Just as a major objective of learning American history is to ensure that we do not repeat our mistakes, 1984 can give warnings to both government systems and individuals regarding how society should not be controlled. The vigorous control system presented in the book stands as a method by which no American would want to live.

What do we learn about Blanches character Essay Example For Students
What do we learn about Blanches character? Essay In this essay I am going to explore what the text in Scene 9, page 98 (from Its dark in here up to page 99 believe you was straight) tell us about Blanches character. This passage is essentially based on and has emphasis on, symbols such as shadows and light, a paper lantern hiding ugliness, words with double meaning it is an obvious metaphor of Blanches conception of reality. In this passage Blanche is made to appear nervous about Mitch having such a radical change of humour in comparison to the last time she saw him. Blanche keeps chattering uncontrollably and the audience would start to see her laugh breathlessly from the moment in which Mitch declares I dont think I ever seen you in the light. Thats a fact! Blanches only way to evade talking about her physical appearance and, eventually, her age, is to answer with a short and artificial Is it? , pretending not to understand him. As a response, Mitch then tears the Chinese paper lantern off the light bulb and switches on the light. She is portrayed as a woman afraid of aging and light. We will write a custom essay on What do we learn about Blanches character? specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now She is always shown trying to hide from any type of thing which is likely to give a clue about what is her real age. The reader is already aware of this earlier in the play. Williams uses this passage to illustrate that she likes darkness. For Blanche, light is to be feared while darkness is a kind friend on which she can rely to hide her fading beauty and, metaphorically, the ugliness and cruelty of the real world. A world in which she has had many bad experiences that no longer wants to remember. We can see an example of Blanches panic towards light when she says (fearfully) Light? Which light? What for? As Mitch shows a clear an interest in Blanche, she is afraid he will find out about the chapter in her life when she is acting almost as a prostitute. Stanley finds out about this and threatens to tell. Another incident the audience is already aware of is when Blanches husband committed suicide, a heartbreak for which she felt responsible and guilty. This passage partly explains Blanches character by exposing her reaction to these events, she has had a hard time accepting them and tries to replace truth with utopia. It is easy for an audience to understand why Blanche wants magic instead of realism after having witnessed this information about her fragile persona during the play. It is the only way to maintain her illusions, and if her illusions disappear, her sanity vanishes. Even though Blanche may be a dreamy character, with dreamy thoughts, and hard to know when she is telling the truth or just making up a lie, she is really aware of being this way. She is shown here to be clear-headed and frank about her need to camouflage reality, to disguise the truth. I misrepresent things to them. I dont tell the truth, I tell what ought to be the truth. Finally, when she is conscious about having lost Mitch she adds And if that is sinful, then let me be damned for it! This also tells us that Blanche can have a wiser half, but can also have a bad temper if she gets excessively irritated about something she cares, as we can see some pages later, before the end of Scene 9, when Mitch has to run away in a startled grasp. It could be said that Blanche is represented as a character dependant on male admiration and desire in order for her to have some self-esteem and this is reinforced in this passage when she says There is some obscure meaning in this but I fail to catch it and What are you leading up to? , as she wants to try to evade the conversation to make Mitch preserve the image of a good-looking lady he has about Blanche, even though she surely knows that Mitch is wishing to have a closer look at her. .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 , .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .postImageUrl , .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 , .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9:hover , .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9:visited , .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9:active { border:0!important; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9:active , .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9 .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ud8e4b26d5b8e622431c15e761e6eabf9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Alexander Pope poem EssayIn conclusion, this passage of the play reinforces the idea of Blanche not just being a character with lunatic dreams. Free Essays on Ritual
When ritual is spoken of in Western society, images of cute, charming and sometimes dangerous activities of ââ¬Ënativeââ¬â¢ societies tend to be conjured up into the mind. Television seems to be full of ceremonies which, at best, tend to be thought of as quaint, at worst, acted out for the tourist industry. Religious belief is on the decline in Western society and this also contributes to the general outlook on rituals and rites. Western industrial society has idolised ideals, rationality and a limited type of practicality and all too often regards the conscious ritual of other cultures as a frivolous curiosity (LaChapelle, 1984:1-6). We have forgotten much in the last 300 hundred years that we should remember the fact that Western society not only had, but still has, rituals and rites of passage. The daily process of getting out of bed, washing, brushing teeth and going to work or school is an unconscious ritual that millions of humankind goes through. These microsocial rituals, or regularities, may well appear never ending and spread their way throughout lifeââ¬â¢s course. Members of any given society may well try to break away from these rituals, but more often than not the ââ¬Ëescapeââ¬â¢ is only temporary. To ââ¬Ëget away from it allââ¬â¢ may well lead to other types of unconscious ritual. Victor Turner (1974:298) has argued that the dialectical relationship of ritual and social structure facilitates creative responses to the negative aspects of daily social structure, and that these responses include alienation, divisiveness and exploitation.
